About the model
Rolf Benz Plura 380 – a sofa with many faces
Soft, distinctly rounded upholstery on a straight-lined metal frame: this is the contrast Norbert Beck created with the Plura for Rolf Benz. Decorative seams frame the upholstery, and there was a choice of three seat heights. Behind the calm shape lies a great deal of functionality. The seat has a metal inner frame with a swivel function and steel sinuous spring suspension, while the back has a metal inner frame with an adjustment mechanism. Rolf Benz launched the range in 2011 and calls it a sofa with many faces.
Plura 380 two-seater in grey and black fabric with footstool
This Plura 380 is a two-seater with a fabric cover in grey and black, and it comes with a footstool. It has a built-in sleep function, so the sofa also serves as a place for guests to sleep. The footstool supports your legs or serves as an extra seat. This makes the ensemble well suited to smaller flats, studies or guest rooms. Grey and black have a calm look and go with light walls as well as with wood. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
The seat height of 43 cm is within the usual range. Beneath the seat is steel sinuous spring suspension, with layered foam on top; the loose, down-like back cushions make leaning back soft. The sofa needs around 1.86 m of wall and 93 cm in depth, and the square footstool takes up a good half a square metre on top of that. If a side section is folded down for sleeping, the sofa becomes longer on that side – make sure you allow space there.
Functions and additions
To sleep, fold one side section outwards and lie lengthways on the sofa; the other side section serves as a headrest. According to Rolf Benz, the folded-down section bears up to 40 kg and is not a seat. On elements with a lie-flat back, the back can also be lowered into a flat position. The series also included a square upholstered seat – in other words, a matching footstool.
Caring for the fabric cover
Regular vacuuming or brushing keeps the weave free of dust. Dab stains quickly with an absorbent cloth, working from the outside inwards. According to Rolf Benz, you can remove small bobbles on the surface with a fabric shaver. Direct sunlight can fade fabric colours, so do not place the sofa unprotected in bright sunlight.
Why buy a pre-owned Rolf Benz Plura 380?
A range with built-in functions such as the Plura is worth buying pre-owned. The mechanisms sit in sturdy metal inner frames, the cushions can be plumped up, and Rolf Benz can renew the cover through its reupholstery service. According to the manufacturer, its foams meet and often exceed the density requirements of the German Furniture Quality Association. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Can you sleep on the Plura 380?
Yes, on elements with a fold-down side section. Fold down one side section and lie lengthways on the sofa; the other side section serves as a headrest. According to Rolf Benz, the folded-down section bears up to 40 kg and is not a seat. Elements with a lie-flat back can also be set flat.
How do you change the back angle on the Plura 380?
Pull the loop to the right of the seat cushion and lean back at the same time. A gas spring assists the movement. The flatter the back, the more the seat becomes a place to relax – on elements with a lie-flat back, right down to the flat lying position.
Which elements are part of the Plura 380 series?
Rolf Benz made the Plura as a stand-alone sofa, an add-on sofa, a corner add-on sofa and a corner add-on unit. There were also end armchairs, some with a tray in black leather, a longchair, an upholstered corner piece, an add-on armchair and a square upholstered seat. These could be combined into small sofas as well as large corner arrangements.
What should you bear in mind about the Plura 380's gas spring?
The reclining function is assisted by a gas spring. Rolf Benz recommends moving it through its full range about once a week. Otherwise, the piston can temporarily become stiff, and the adjustment is less smooth.
What is inside the Plura 380?
According to Rolf Benz, the seat rests on a metal inner frame with an integrated swivel function and steel sinuous spring suspension, also known as Nosag. On top is polyurethane foam, built up in layers of different heights and degrees of firmness and covered with polyester fleece. The back has its own metal inner frame with an adjustment function.
Are the Plura 380's back cushions available in other materials?
On request, Rolf Benz made the loose, low back cushions in a different cover material from the upholstery. This allowed, for example, a mix of leather and fabric. According to the manufacturer, the cushions provide comfort for your back and can be arranged freely.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Rolf Benz was founded in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz in Nagold. His first range, Addiform, consisted of elements that could be combined freely into a seating landscape. Well-known models include the Plura by Norbert Beck, with a steplessly adjustable back, and the Nova by Joachim Nees, whose back opens out into a reclining position. The furniture is made largely by hand in two company-owned factories in the northern Black Forest; every sofa undergoes a final inspection.
