Rolf Benz Nova – from high-back sofa to bed

Sitting, lounging, lying down, sleeping – Joachim Nees designed the Nova for all of these in 2013. Rolf Benz describes it as a sofa that becomes a high-back sofa, recliner, daybed or bed, or something in between. In 2014, the Red Dot Award jury praised its flexible back. Inside is a metal and wood inner frame with the adjustment mechanism integrated into it. The upholstery is made of layered polyurethane foam, and the seat also has a soft topper. The continuous decorative seam is characteristic of its shape.

This Nova is a two-seater, upholstered in grey fabric. It has a built-in sleep function. This makes the sofa a good fit for rooms with a dual role: a place to watch TV in the evening, a bed when guests stay overnight. If you like, you can also use the adjustment during the day for reading or resting. Grey is an understated choice that goes with almost any wall colour and many wood tones. It is one of a kind.

Seating comfort and space

How firm a sofa feels depends on how its upholstery is built up. On the Nova, a soft foam topper sits on the layered foam, and Rolf Benz describes the seat and back as soft. The seat height of 44 cm is standard. The sofa needs around 1.93 m of wall space and 1.18 m in depth; leave 60 to 80 cm in front of it as a walkway. For sleeping, the Nova becomes considerably deeper: Rolf Benz states just under two metres for the lie-flat sofa.

Functions and additions

The Nova has several positions. Fold the back upwards and you get an extra-high backrest for sitting upright. Pull the seat forwards and the back lowers to any angle, right down to the lying position. This turns the sofa into a place to relax, a daybed or a bed. The headrest can also be adjusted. The series could be supplemented with cushions in various sizes and a side tray in saddle leather.

Caring for the fabric cover

Brush or vacuum the cover regularly, plumping up the cushions as you go. Dab up liquids straight away with an absorbent cloth. According to Rolf Benz, direct sunlight and the light from a nearby halogen lamp can fade fabric colours. If a synthetic fibre cover builds up static, wiping it with a damp terry towel and distilled water helps.
