Rolf Benz Mio – lounge armchair by Norbert Beck

Norbert Beck designed the Mio for Rolf Benz, and it was part of the 2011 collection. Rolf Benz describes the range as an invitation to lounge and relax. Its many individual elements can be combined into classic sofa groupings as well as free-standing islands in the room. The Mio is built using classic upholstery techniques: the seat rests on a wooden inner frame with spring core suspension. On top of this is polyurethane foam, covered by a chambered topper with a down-like feel, made of foam sticks and polyester fibres. The metal feet in graphite metallic came in heights of six or eight centimetres.

This Mio armchair bears the model number 552 and is upholstered in brown nubuck leather. Nubuck is dyed right through and finely buffed on the surface, which gives it a velvety, warm feel. Run your hand over it and light and dark shades alternate – Rolf Benz calls this the writing effect. According to the manufacturer, the armchair complements the Mio ensemble. However, it works just as well as a reading spot next to a different sofa or as a stand-alone armchair in a study. It is one of a kind.

Seating comfort and space

With a seat height of 40 cm, you sit lower than on most sofas, where 42 to 45 cm is usual – in keeping with its relaxed character. The spring core gives noticeably when you sit down, and the down-like topper makes the surface soft. With an overall height of 70 cm, the backrest supports your back, not your head. The armchair takes up 96 by 96 cm, just under one square metre. Allow around 60 cm in front of it for getting up.

Elements and additions

Besides the armchair, the Mio range included stand-alone sofas in three widths, add-on and corner elements, a chaise longue and an upholstered bench. Many elements were also available in an extra-deep version, with low or high side sections. There were also piped cushions in several sizes, including a back cushion with a bolster roll. The Mio is no longer listed on the current Rolf Benz website. Rolf Benz offers a reupholstery service for its upholstered furniture through specialist retailers.

Caring for the nubuck leather

Nubuck is mainly cared for dry: a soft brush removes dust and raises the nap. Dab up spills straight away with an absorbent cloth, without rubbing. Rolf Benz recommends caring for leather at least every six months; use a product made specifically for nubuck. Direct sunlight and radiators dry the leather out.

Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture in Nagold since 1964 and in 2020 was one of the first manufacturers to receive the ‘Furniture Made in Germany’ label. According to Rolf Benz, its foams meet and often exceed the density requirements of the German Furniture Quality Association. Density determines how long upholstery keeps its shape. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
