About the model

Rolf Benz Grata – straight lines with a spring core

The Grata is a straight-lined sofa range that Rolf Benz listed as model 330. Beneath the seat, a spring core suspension sits on an inner wooden frame. The seat and back are made of polyurethane foam covered with a down-like topper. This topper is sewn into chambers and filled with foam sticks and polyester fibres. The side sections were available low or high, and the metal feet in gloss chrome or black. One variant had back cushions with pintucks, along with matching scatter cushions.

Grata three-seater in grey fabric

This Grata is a three-seater with a grey fabric cover. The straight, calm shape blends into both modern and classic interiors. It seats three people, and as the main sofa in a living room, it forms a seating group with an armchair or a second sofa. Coloured cushions let you change the look of the grey to suit the season. It also suits a study or a reception area. The simple shape goes equally well with wood, metal and glass.

Seating comfort and space

The Grata combines a sprung base with a soft surface: the spring core gives when you sit down, and the down-like topper feels soft. At 40 cm, you sit slightly lower than on most sofas, whose seats are 42 to 45 cm high. The sofa needs around 2.25 m of wall space and a depth of 90 cm, plus 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front.

Elements and additions

The Grata range included a standalone sofa, an add-on sofa, a corner add-on sofa, an extra-large add-on sofa, an add-on bench and an upholstered end bench. These were used to create straight sofas as well as corner combinations. Side sections were available low or high, and back cushions also with pintucks. The Grata is no longer listed in Rolf Benz’s current range. However, the manufacturer offers reupholstery for most of its upholstered furniture.

Caring for the fabric cover

Because the seat and back have a chambered topper, you should plump up the cushions regularly and smooth the cover from the inside outwards. This distributes the filling evenly. Vacuum away dust about once a month with the upholstery nozzle on low suction. Dab stains immediately without rubbing.

Why buy a pre-owned Rolf Benz Grata?

Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture since 1964, and since 2020 it has carried the ‘Furniture Made in Germany’ label. A pre-owned Grata is a worthwhile choice because it relies on classic upholstery construction: a spring core in the seat, an inner wooden frame and cushions with a soft topper. On top of that, it has a calm shape that adapts to changing interiors. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

Which side sections are available for the Grata?

Rolf Benz offered the Grata with low or high side sections. Low side sections make the sofa look flatter and more open, while high ones offer more surface to lean against. The choice applied equally to the standalone sofa and the add-on elements.

What are the pintuck back cushions on the Grata?

Pintucks are narrow, stitched edges along the rim of the cushion. Rolf Benz offered pintuck back cushions as a variant on the Grata. They emphasise the outline of the cushions and give the sofa a tailored line.

How do you protect the Grata’s fabric cover from fading?

Keep the sofa out of direct sunlight and away from constant strong halogen light. According to Rolf Benz, dark colours change faster than light ones when exposed to this. This cannot be prevented entirely, as every fabric reacts to light over time.

Can Rolf Benz reupholster the Grata?

In most cases, yes. Rolf Benz assesses the piece on the basis of the documents submitted and calculates the cost of each reupholstery job individually. The factory handles the cutting, sewing and upholstering itself, and the process is arranged through a dealer.

Can jeans transfer dye to the Grata?

Yes, many dark denim fabrics are not colourfast and can permanently stain upholstery covers. Such discolouration cannot be removed from most covers. A throw on your favourite spot helps to prevent this.

How do you keep the Grata’s fabric cover clean?

Brush the fabric with a soft brush and vacuum it on low suction. A damp chamois leather freshens up the fibres in between. For a complete clean, a professional upholstery cleaner is the right choice.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

About the brand

All Rolf Benz in stock

Rolf Benz was founded in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz in Nagold. His first range, Addiform, consisted of elements that could be combined freely into a seating landscape. Well-known models include the Plura by Norbert Beck, with a steplessly adjustable back, and the Nova by Joachim Nees, whose back opens out into a reclining position. The furniture is made largely by hand in two company-owned factories in the northern Black Forest; every sofa undergoes a final inspection.
