About the model
Rolf Benz Grata – sofa range with a spring core
The Grata, formerly listed by Rolf Benz as model 330, is a sofa range with classic upholstery construction. An inner wooden frame supports the spring core suspension. The seat and back are made of polyurethane foam beneath a down-like topper. The range comprised a standalone sofa, an add-on sofa, a corner add-on sofa, an extra-large add-on sofa, an add-on bench and an upholstered end bench. There was a choice of 40 or 43 cm for the seat height, and of gloss chrome or traffic black for the feet. One variant had back cushions with pintucks, that is, with narrow, stitched edges.
Grata three-seater in grey fabric with footstool
This Grata is a three-seater with a grey fabric cover, and it comes with a footstool. The footstool extends the seat so you can stretch out your legs, or serves as an extra seat for guests. The grey looks calm and can be combined with wood, white and colourful accents. An ensemble for living rooms where several people like to sit together and occasionally lie down. The footstool can also be placed in a reading corner or by the window.
Seating comfort and space
The spring core in the seat gives pleasantly, and the chambered topper above it makes the surface soft. With a seat height of 40 cm, you sit slightly lower than usual, which is good for leaning back. The sofa takes up around 2.25 m of wall space and 90 cm of depth. The footstool is a good metre wide and around 60 cm deep. If it stands in front of the sofa, factor its depth into the walking space.
Elements and additions
Besides the standalone sofa and add-on elements, the range also included an upholstered bench and scatter cushions. Back cushion pads were also available as an addition. Side sections came in two heights, and back cushions optionally with pintucks. Rolf Benz no longer offers the Grata. For reupholstery later on, Rolf Benz specialist retailers are the right people to contact.
Caring for the fabric cover
Change where you sit from time to time so that the seat settles evenly. Plump up the cushions with the down-like topper regularly. Remove dust with the upholstery nozzle on low suction. Do not place the sofa in strong sunlight, and keep it about 20 to 30 cm away from radiators. Leave a deep clean to a professional upholstery cleaner.
Why buy a pre-owned Rolf Benz Grata?
Rolf Benz, founded in Nagold in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz, has carried the ‘Furniture Made in Germany’ label since 2020. With the Grata, what counts is what lies beneath the cover: an inner wooden frame, a spring core and foam beneath a soft topper. If you want a new cover later on, Rolf Benz takes care of this itself, arranged through specialist retailers. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Can Rolf Benz reupholster the Grata?
Yes, in most cases. The manufacturer calculates the cost of each reupholstery job individually and carries it out itself, following its own standards for cutting, sewing and upholstering. Your point of contact is a Rolf Benz dealer, and the service is available in the EU and Switzerland.
How do you remove stains from the Grata’s fabric cover?
Soak up liquid immediately with an absorbent white cloth and work over a large area from seam to seam. For stains of unknown origin, try lukewarm water with a little mild shampoo first. Do not use the sofa again until everything is dry.
Which side sections are available for the Grata?
Rolf Benz offered the Grata with low or high side sections. Low side sections make the sofa look flatter and more open, while high ones offer more surface to lean against. The choice applied equally to the standalone sofa and the add-on elements.
Can jeans transfer dye to the Grata?
Yes, many dark denim fabrics are not colourfast and can permanently stain upholstery covers. Such discolouration cannot be removed from most covers. A throw on your favourite spot helps to prevent this.
What feet does the Grata have?
The Grata stands on metal feet, which were available in gloss chrome or lacquered black. They lift the body off the floor and make the sofa look light despite the generous cushions.
How do you protect the Grata’s fabric cover from fading?
Keep the sofa out of direct sunlight and away from constant strong halogen light. According to Rolf Benz, dark colours change faster than light ones when exposed to this. This cannot be prevented entirely, as every fabric reacts to light over time.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Rolf Benz was founded in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz in Nagold. His first range, Addiform, consisted of elements that could be combined freely into a seating landscape. Well-known models include the Plura by Norbert Beck, with a steplessly adjustable back, and the Nova by Joachim Nees, whose back opens out into a reclining position. The furniture is made largely by hand in two company-owned factories in the northern Black Forest; every sofa undergoes a final inspection.
