Rolf Benz Dono – sofa with a wraparound shelf

Rolf Benz launched the Dono in 2004 to mark the company’s 40th anniversary; it was designed by Christian Werner. According to the manufacturer, its clear, understated look made it the most successful sofa of the decade. Its defining features are the wraparound shelf and the frame made of matt brushed stainless steel. The shelf was available with wood veneer or covered in leather. The back cushions can be attached in different places and adjusted, and there are also loose side cushions.

This Dono is a corner sofa with a beige leather cover, made up of two pieces. Seen from the front, the corner is on the left. With room for four people, it suits large living rooms and open-plan layouts, where it clearly defines the seating area. The light beige looks calm and combines with wood, stone and dark accents. For family evenings and guests, the corner sofa offers plenty of seats.

Seating comfort and space

The seat height of 44 cm is within the usual range. Because the back cushions are adjustable, you can choose between sitting upright and a relaxed position. The corner sofa takes up 2.95 m along its long side, and the left-hand section extends 2.4 m into the room. Allow 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of both sides.

Elements and additions

The Dono was conceived as a range: sofas in four widths, add-on elements and corner solutions such as this corner sofa. The seat depth could optionally be adjusted. Rolf Benz no longer includes the Dono in its range. However, the manufacturer offers reupholstery for most of its upholstered furniture, with new foam if necessary.

Caring for the leather cover

Wipe off dust regularly with a soft cloth. Rolf Benz advises caring for leather at least every six months. Dirt is more noticeable on light leather, and dark jeans can transfer dye. Solvents, glass cleaners and greases such as udder balm leave permanent stains. Avoid strong sunlight and proximity to radiators so that the leather stays supple.
