Rolf Benz Cara – delicate modular range

Anita Schmidt designed the Cara for Rolf Benz as a delicate modular range. Individual modules are combined to form sofas, corner groups or combinations with a longchair. Five seat widths, two side section heights, two seat heights and three seat depths allow for many variations. Rolf Benz controls the seat depth via the thickness of the back cushions. The Cara is built on an inner wooden frame with steel sinuous springs, topped with carefully matched layers of cold foam. There are eleven foot variants, from individual feet to metal runners.

Cara three-seater in red fabric with armchair and footstool – floor model

This Cara suite consists of a three-seater with a red fabric cover, an armchair and a footstool. It is a floor model: the pieces were on display in a showroom and have never been used in a home. The strong red makes a clear statement, especially against light walls. Together, the three pieces form a complete seating group for the living room, with the footstool serving as a footrest or extra seat. Red combines well with grey, white and light wood.

Seating comfort and space

How firm the Cara feels depends on the upholstery: ‘Classic’ is slightly firmer when you sit down, ‘Lounge Plus’ noticeably softer. With a seat height of 45 cm, you sit fairly upright. The sofa needs around 2.45 m of wall space and a depth of 88 cm, and the armchair adds a good 70 cm of width. Leave 60 to 80 cm of walking space clear in front of the group.

Elements and additions

Rolf Benz still offers the Cara. Through specialist retailers, this group can be supplemented with an upholstered bench, a movable headrest, side cushions or scatter cushions, for example. The range also offers optional functions: adjustable side sections, a reclining function in the back, a concealed headrest and a footrest. According to Rolf Benz, the concealed headrest cannot be retrofitted. The 934 coffee table range is available to match.

Caring for the fabric cover

Vacuum the fabric regularly with the upholstery nozzle on low suction and brush it with a soft brush. Light changes every fabric colour over time, so do not place the group in strong sunlight. Dab stains immediately from the edge towards the centre. Household cleaners containing solvents and steam cleaners are unsuitable for the cover.

A floor model like this Cara suite has only ever been on display and has never been used in a home. You get a seating group of sofa, armchair and footstool that are already matched to one another. Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture since 1964 and has carried the ‘Furniture Made in Germany’ label since 2020. Because the Cara is still in the range, the group can be added to later. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
