Rolf Benz Cara – compact modular sofa

Even the first generation of the Cara was popular as a delicate modular range. Rolf Benz later revised Anita Schmidt’s design with new ideas. With an overall width starting at 136 cm, the Cara is the most compact sofa in the collection, according to the manufacturer. Ten add-on models can be combined freely. There are two upholstery options: ‘Classic’ is slightly firmer, ‘Lounge Plus’ noticeably softer. Both are made of cold foams that differ in density and compression hardness. The Cara is built on an inner wooden frame with steel sinuous springs.

Cara three-seater in grey and blue fabric with a second sofa – floor model

This Cara suite in grey and blue consists of a three-seater and a second sofa, both with fabric covers. It is a floor model that was on display in a showroom and has never been used in a home. Placed at right angles or facing each other, two sofas form a seating group for conversation and guests. The muted shade goes well with wood, white and grey. If you like, you can later add a Cara armchair or footstool to the group.

Seating comfort and space

Depending on the upholstery, the Cara feels slightly firmer or noticeably softer. With a seat height of 45 cm, it is at the upper end of the usual range. Each of the two sofas needs around 1.8 m of wall space and a depth of 88 cm. Placed at right angles, the group needs a corner of the room with two free walls. Leave 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of each.

Elements and additions

The Cara is still in the Rolf Benz range, so the system can be added to. There are ten add-on models to choose from, as well as an armchair, an upholstered bench and a footstool. There is also an add-on bench with a swivelling seat and integrated back adjustment. Accessories include a movable headrest as well as side cushions and scatter cushions. Important with regard to functions: the concealed headrest is only available as a factory option.

Caring for the fabric cover

Plump up the cushions regularly and smooth the cover from the inside outwards so that the upholstery keeps its shape. Remove dust at least once a month with the upholstery nozzle. From time to time, a damp, soft chamois leather freshens up the fabric. Dab stains immediately without rubbing. Leave deep cleaning to a professional upholstery cleaner.

A floor model has only been on display, never used in a home. What is more, the Cara is a modular range: the configuration of this suite has already been planned out. Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture since 1964 and was founded in Nagold in the Black Forest. The Cara is still part of the range, so accessories and cushions are available from specialist retailers. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
