Rolf Benz Aura – versatile functional sofa

Rolf Benz calls the Aura a homage to elegance. Beck Design created the functional sofa in 2018, and it was presented at the furniture fair in Milan. Behind the slim shape lies technology: the seat and back have inner metal frames, with a swivel function integrated into the seat and an adjustment mechanism into the back. Underneath, steel sinuous springs provide the suspension. Delicate cast aluminium feet in black, umbra grey or a polished finish hold the body lightly above the floor. In its range, Rolf Benz listed the sofa as model 388.

This Aura is a two-seater with a grey fabric cover. The grey is understated and can be combined with both light and dark floors. As a two-seater, the sofa fits into medium-sized living rooms, a study or a reading corner. Add an armchair or a side table and you have a calm seating corner for two to three people. On its delicate feet, the sofa looks light even in smaller rooms.

Seating comfort and space

The Aura feels soft yet supportive: Rolf Benz builds the seat from layers of foam of different firmness, wrapped in polyester fleece. The seat height is 42 cm, which is within the usual range. Allow just under 2.5 m of wall length for the sofa. With a depth of 1.07 m and 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front, it takes up just under two metres of room depth.

Elements and additions

The Aura range included a standalone sofa, add-on and corner add-on sofas, and shelves in two sizes. The shelves serve as a table for glasses, plates or books. Depending on the element, the Aura has adjustable side sections, a swivelling seat and fold-up back cushions. The Aura is no longer listed in Rolf Benz’s current range. However, the manufacturer does offer reupholstery.

Caring for the fabric cover

Freshen up the cover from time to time with a clean, damp chamois leather, which keeps the fibres elastic. Household cleaners containing solvents should not be used on the fabric. Blot spills immediately with an absorbent cloth, without rubbing. Leave a complete clean to a professional upholstery cleaner. Direct sunlight can bleach fabric colours over time.

Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture since 1964 and has carried the ‘Furniture Made in Germany’ label since 2020. The Aura is a more recent range with clean, calm lines that are not tied to short-lived trends. Buying pre-owned gets you a functional sofa whose mechanics are housed in inner metal frames. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
