About the model
Rolf Benz Aura – elegant functional sofa by Beck Design
Beck Design created the Aura for Rolf Benz in 2018. Standalone sofas, add-on sofas, corner add-on sofas and shelves were combined to form straight sofas and corner solutions. The Aura is built on inner metal frames with steel sinuous springs. The seat and back are made of polyurethane foam built up in layers of different thicknesses and firmness. The shelves were available with oak or walnut veneer, with slate veneer or covered in leather. Rolf Benz calls the sofa a homage to elegance.
Aura two-seater in beige fabric
This Aura is a two-seater with a beige fabric cover and a reclining function. It lets you switch between sitting upright and a relaxed position. The light beige keeps the room friendly and goes well with wood and natural tones. The sofa suits living rooms where people read or watch TV in the evening. In a study, too, it offers a place to take a breather. Cushions in natural tones or green make it easy to vary the beige.
Seating comfort and space
Rolf Benz gives the Aura relaxed upholstery: you sink softly into the cushioning rather than sitting on top of it. The foam is built up in layers of different firmness, which provides support. At 42 cm, the seat height is within the usual range of 42 to 45 cm. The two-seater needs just under 2.5 m of wall space and 1.07 m of depth, with 60 to 80 cm of walking space left in front.
Functions and additions
This Aura has a reclining function. Depending on the element, the Aura’s back cushions fold up to form a high backrest, the side sections can be adjusted or a seat can be swivelled into a longchair. Adjustable side sections provide lateral support or fold down so you can lie down. The Aura is no longer listed in the current range, but Rolf Benz does offer reupholstery.
Caring for the fabric cover
Vacuum the fabric about once a month with the upholstery nozzle on low suction, as Rolf Benz recommends. A soft brush loosens dust from the weave. Dab stains immediately with an absorbent, light-coloured cloth, from the edge towards the centre. Test cleaning products on a hidden area first. Steam cleaners damage the cover.

The Aura’s mechanics are housed in inner metal frames, and the seats rest on steel sinuous springs – a construction made for everyday use. Rolf Benz can renew the cover via specialist retailers, including the foam if necessary. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

How does the Aura become a longchair?
First fold down the side section, then swivel the seat to the side. This creates a longchair for stretching out, provided the element has this function. When upright, the side section provides lateral support while you sit.
What is it like to sit on the Aura?
The Aura has relaxed upholstery, with the cover sitting loosely around the foam. The seat depth is 62 cm, so you can lean back comfortably. If you want more back support, fold the back cushions up to form a high backrest, provided the element has this function.
What feet does the Aura have?
The Aura stands on delicate cast aluminium feet, which were available polished or powder-coated in black or umbra grey. Because the feet are slender, the sofa looks light despite its functions.
Which back cushions were available for the Aura?
Besides the fold-up back cushions, Rolf Benz offered a low version and a back cushion pad. This made it possible to adapt the back height to the room and to your sitting habits. Low backs also make a sofa look more open.
Can Rolf Benz reupholster the Aura?
In most cases, yes. Rolf Benz assesses the piece on the basis of the documents submitted and calculates the cost of each reupholstery job individually. The factory handles the cutting, sewing and upholstering itself, and the process is arranged through a dealer.
How do you care for an Aura with a fabric cover?
Freshen up the fabric from time to time with a damp, soft chamois leather; the moisture keeps the fibres elastic. Household cleaners containing solvents should not be used on the cover. Leave a complete clean to a professional upholstery cleaner.

Rolf Benz was founded in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz in Nagold. His first range, Addiform, consisted of elements that could be combined freely into a seating landscape. Well-known models include the Plura by Norbert Beck, with a steplessly adjustable back, and the Nova by Joachim Nees, whose back opens out into a reclining position. The furniture is made largely by hand in two company-owned factories in the northern Black Forest; every sofa undergoes a final inspection.
