About the model
Rolf Benz 50 – the anniversary sofa
With the Rolf Benz 50, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. Norbert Beck of Beck Design created the sofa in the tradition of Addiform, the first range from 1964. Typical details include pleated topstitching and elaborate luggage-style seams. The seat follows traditional upholstery craft: a pocket spring core sits on webbing suspension, topped with cold foam. In the Lounge comfort version, a chambered topper filled with fibre sticks covers the seat. There is a choice of two seat heights, two seat depths and two upholstery types.
Rolf Benz 50 two-seater in grey and taupe leather
This Rolf Benz 50 is a two-seater with a leather cover in grey and taupe. The muted shade looks warm and can be combined with wood, stone and light fabrics. Rolf Benz describes the shape as generous and lounge-like. Accordingly, the sofa offers two people plenty of room to sit, lean back and stretch out. It is suitable as the main sofa in a living room or as the calm centrepiece of a reading corner.
Seating comfort and space
Rolf Benz gives the 50 particularly relaxed upholstery, so you sink softly into the cushioning. Underneath, a pocket spring core provides support and gives when you sit down. At 41 cm, the seat height is just below the usual 42 to 45 cm, which suits the lounge-like shape. The sofa needs a good 2.5 m of wall space and a depth of 93 cm. With 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front, that comes to a good one and a half metres of room depth.
Elements and additions
Rolf Benz still offers the 50. The range is available as a standalone, add-on and corner sofa, plus a longchair, upholstered bench, footstool and a swivel armchair, also with a high back. Sofas can optionally be fitted with a back mechanism with a gas spring for the reclining position and a function cushion that serves as a headrest. Whether a sofa has these features depends on how it was ordered. You can get an armchair or footstool from Rolf Benz specialist retailers.
Caring for the leather cover
Rolf Benz recommends caring for leather at least every six months. In between, it is enough to remove dust with a soft cloth. Dab up spilt liquid immediately with an absorbent cloth. Avoid solvents, all-purpose cleaners and care products for car leather, as they leave shiny patches or discolouration. Distance from radiators and protection from strong sunlight keep the leather supple.
Why buy a pre-owned Rolf Benz 50?
Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture in Nagold since 1964 and has carried the ‘Furniture Made in Germany’ label since 2020. The 50 is the brand’s anniversary model and is still in the range. Rolf Benz relies on high-density foams, which according to the manufacturer keep their shape for a long time. The factory can renew the cover if required. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the sofa called the Rolf Benz 50?
The name stands for 50 years of Rolf Benz: the sofa was created in 2014 for the company’s anniversary. It was modelled on the design icon Addiform from the year the brand was founded. The 50 was nominated for the German Design Award 2015.
What is the difference between Lounge and Lounge Plus on the Rolf Benz 50?
Both use cold foam over a spring core. With ‘Lounge’, a topper filled with fibre sticks lies on top, which Rolf Benz describes as soft and supportive at all times. ‘Lounge Plus’ combines soft sinking-in comfort with a smoother surface.
How does the back adjustment on the Rolf Benz 50 work?
The optional mechanism works with a gas spring. By hand and with little effort, you can move the back continuously from the sitting to the reclining position. In the process, the backrest extends by up to 12 cm.
What is the function cushion on the Rolf Benz 50?
An optional cushion in two heights that complements the back function. A continuously adjustable mechanism turns it into a headrest. This keeps your head supported even in the reclining position.
Is there an armchair to go with the Rolf Benz 50?
Yes. The Rolf Benz 50 armchair has the same seam details as the sofa, stands on a star base and swivels. It is also available as a high-back version, along with a matching footstool.
Which covers are available for the Rolf Benz 50?
Rolf Benz offers the 50 in over 200 fabrics and over 100 leathers. There was also a particularly soft, unembossed full-grain leather for the model that shows the natural texture of the hide.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Rolf Benz was founded in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz in Nagold. His first range, Addiform, consisted of elements that could be combined freely into a seating landscape. Well-known models include the Plura by Norbert Beck, with a steplessly adjustable back, and the Nova by Joachim Nees, whose back opens out into a reclining position. The furniture is made largely by hand in two company-owned factories in the northern Black Forest; every sofa undergoes a final inspection.
