About the model
Rolf Benz 322 – sofa by Anita Schmidt
The Rolf Benz 322 was designed by Anita Schmidt. Its hallmarks are the outward-curving sides, the high back and the angled feet made of cast aluminium. Their textured surface is partly polished. Beneath the cover, an inner wooden frame and steel sinuous springs do the work. The seat and back are made of polyether foam built up in layers of different thicknesses and firmness. The body is also covered with foam. The cover has a quilted backing of polyester fleece.
Rolf Benz 322 two-seater in brown leather
This Rolf Benz 322 is a two-seater with a brown leather cover. The warm brown accentuates the curved sides and the high back. The generously proportioned two-seater offers two people plenty of room. It is suitable for a living room, a reading room or a study with a seating area for visitors. Add a 322 armchair and you have a matching suite from a single series. Brown leather pairs well with wood and green tones.
Seating comfort and space
Rolf Benz gives this model relaxed upholstery, so you sink into the cushioning. The layers of softer and firmer foam provide support. At 43 cm, the seat height is within the usual range of 42 to 45 cm. The sofa needs two metres of wall space and a depth of 88 cm. With 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front, allow a good one and a half metres of room depth.
Elements and additions
The 322 series included two-seaters and three-seaters as well as armchairs in the same design. This made it possible to put together matching suites from a single series. The 322 is no longer listed in Rolf Benz’s current range. Worth knowing for the future: Rolf Benz offers reupholstery for most of its upholstered furniture. The factory also replaces the foam if necessary.
Caring for the leather cover
Remove dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Rolf Benz advises caring for leather at least every six months to keep it supple. Blot stains immediately with an absorbent cloth, without rubbing. Solvents, all-purpose cleaners and greases such as shoe polish can cause permanent discolouration. Keep it away from radiators and avoid strong sunlight.
Why buy a pre-owned Rolf Benz 322?
Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture since 1964, when the company was founded in Nagold by the upholsterer Rolf Benz. The 322 combines a distinctive shape with classic upholstery construction: an inner wooden frame, steel sinuous springs and layers of foam. Over time, leather develops a patina of its own. Should you want a new cover later on, Rolf Benz offers its own service for this. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What defines the shape of the Rolf Benz 322?
Stylepark describes the 322 as a sofa with a strong presence. Its defining features are the outward-sweeping sides and the high back. These are joined by angled cast aluminium feet with a partly polished surface.
How is the Rolf Benz 322 upholstered?
In the classic way: beneath the cover there is an inner wooden frame with steel sinuous springs. On top of this are layers of polyether foam that become firmer towards the bottom. This lets you sink in softly while still being supported.
What is it like to sit on the Rolf Benz 322?
Relaxed yet supported, as the firmer lower layers of foam provide stability. Stylepark gives a seat depth of 59 cm for the 322. This means you sit upright and can still lean back comfortably.
What does the ‘quilted backing’ on the Rolf Benz 322 mean?
On the inside, the 322 cover is quilted to a polyester fleece that sits between the foam and the leather. According to Rolf Benz, the fleece allows the cover to stretch evenly. This makes the leather hug the cushioning.
Can Rolf Benz reupholster the 322?
Rolf Benz offers its own reupholstery service for this, in the EU and Switzerland. The factory assesses the piece on the basis of documents, replaces wearing parts and swaps the foam if necessary. The quote and the process are handled by a Rolf Benz dealer.
How do you care for the leather Rolf Benz 322?
Avoid glass and all-purpose cleaners, as they can leave permanent differences in colour. Test every care product beforehand on a hidden area using a soft white cloth. If the cloth takes on colour from the leather, the product is unsuitable.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Rolf Benz was founded in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz in Nagold. His first range, Addiform, consisted of elements that could be combined freely into a seating landscape. Well-known models include the Plura by Norbert Beck, with a steplessly adjustable back, and the Nova by Joachim Nees, whose back opens out into a reclining position. The furniture is made largely by hand in two company-owned factories in the northern Black Forest; every sofa undergoes a final inspection.
