About the model
Walter Knoll Grand Suite – a modular system with shelf board
For Walter Knoll, the design studio EOOS conceived Grand Suite as a modular system: corner, middle and end units that can be arranged on the right or the left. They form straight sofas, corner configurations or chaises longues. Typical of the programme is the shelf board in saddle leather with elaborately finished seams, into which the horizontal line of the upholstery flows. The units rest on a black-lacquered beech base. Soft, generous cushions and removable covers are part of the concept.
Grand Suite two-seater in beige fabric – floor model
Seen from the front, this two-seater starts on the left with a low platform in black Paco 1425 leather and a board above it – shelf space on two levels. Next comes an open chaise-longue seat without a backrest for stretching out your legs, then a seat with loose back cushions and an upholstered armrest. It is covered in the light beige fabric Garbo 7737 Pearl. It was on display and has never been used in a home.
Why a Walter Knoll Grand Suite floor model?
Walter Knoll worked with architects early on: in 1927 the company furnished flats designed by Mies van der Rohe. This closeness to architecture also shows in Grand Suite, which is intended for private homes as well as hotels. Saddle leather, a beech base and removable covers are made to last for many years – and this Grand Suite comes from a display, not from a household. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Die Wurzeln von Walter Knoll reichen bis 1865 zurück, als Wilhelm Knoll in Stuttgart ein Ledergeschäft eröffnete. Sein Sohn Walter gründete 1925 ein eigenes Unternehmen, das 1927 Wohnungen von Mies van der Rohe in der Stuttgarter Weissenhofsiedlung einrichtete. Heute sitzt die Firma in Herrenberg. Seit 1997 entwirft das Wiener Büro EOOS viele Modelle, etwa die Sofalandschaft Living Landscape, deren End- und Eckelemente sich um 90 Grad drehen lassen, Jaan Living mit federgefüllten Polstern und Prime Time.
