About the model
Walter Knoll Foster 503 – upholstery on a floating frame
Norman Foster and Walter Knoll have worked together since the company furnished the Reichstag; the Foster collection grew out of this partnership. The 503 is larger all over than its predecessors, the 500 and 501. According to Foster + Partners, it draws on the Italian idea of the living platform, with softer upholstery and a more residential feel. Base, back and armrests are in exact proportion, and a slender steel frame makes the body appear to float. It comes as an armchair and as a two-, two-and-a-half- and three-seater.
Foster 503 three-seater in red leather
This three-seater is upholstered entirely in red leather. Three loose seat cushions and three back cushions offer room for three people; the box-shaped armrests finish at the height of the backrest. Below, a steel skid frame in matt chrome carries the sofa. The strong red sets a clear accent and goes well with light walls, wood and grey. A one-of-a-kind piece for a living room, study or reception area.

The Foster 503 is built on a beech frame, padded with foam and a layer of wadding; the seat cushions are removable. Die Wurzeln von Walter Knoll reichen bis 1865 zurück, als Wilhelm Knoll in Stuttgart ein Ledergeschäft eröffnete. Sein Sohn Walter gründete 1925 ein eigenes Unternehmen, das 1927 Wohnungen von Mies van der Rohe in der Stuttgarter Weissenhofsiedlung einrichtete. Heute sitzt die Firma in Herrenberg. Seit 1997 entwirft das Wiener Büro EOOS viele Modelle, etwa die Sofalandschaft Living Landscape, deren End- und Eckelemente sich um 90 Grad drehen lassen, Jaan Living mit federgefüllten Polstern und Prime Time.
