About the model
Walter Knoll Jaan Living – soft sofa by EOOS
Jaan Living comes from the Viennese design studio EOOS, whose career, according to Walter Knoll, began at the manufacturer itself in Herrenberg. In 2011 the sofa won the Red Dot Design Award. The generous cushions seem to float above a delicate frame, and Walter Knoll speaks of a softness you want to sink into for a long time. Everything is supported by a wooden structure with sinuous springs. The seat cushions come in a casual version with chambered feather filling over a cold foam core, or in a tailored version made of cold foam topped with wadding. The feet are made of aluminium.
Jaan Living two-seater in grey fabric with armchair and footstool
This set consists of a Jaan Living two-seater with a grey fabric cover, an armchair and a footstool. Going by its dimensions, the sofa corresponds to element 782-25 in the range. Together, the sofa and armchair offer three seats, and the footstool serves as a footrest or as an extra seat for guests. The understated grey can be combined with wood, natural tones and colourful cushions. The set suits a living room where you read, welcome guests and put your feet up in the evening.
Seating comfort and space
Sinuous springs work beneath the cushions; above them, depending on the version, there is feather filling or firm cold foam. According to the data sheet, this element has a seat depth of just under 70 cm, so the seat is fairly deep. The seat height of 44 cm is standard. With an overall height of 70 cm, the backrest stays low. The sofa needs around 2.1 m of wall space and a depth of 95 cm, plus room for the armchair, the footstool and around 60 to 80 cm of walking space.
Elements and additions
Jaan Living is a modular range made up of models 782 and 783, each available as a standalone sofa, chaise longue and add-on sofa. There are also two footstools, freestanding or attached table elements, and shelf boards in satin-finished black glass or saddle leather. All elements can stand on their own. According to Walter Knoll, the range is still available. The manufacturer offers felt or plastic glides as well as stopper glides for Jaan Living as original spare parts.
Caring for the fabric cover
Vacuum crumbs and sand regularly using the smooth upholstery nozzle on low suction. Dab up liquids immediately without rubbing, and avoid stain removers and solvents. For stains, Walter Knoll recommends professional dry cleaning. All covers in the range are removable. Ideally, plump up and pat any loose cushions every day so that the filling is evenly distributed.
Why buy a pre-owned Walter Knoll Jaan Living?
Walter Knoll’s story begins in 1865 with Wilhelm Knoll’s leather shop in Stuttgart; today, production takes place in Mötzingen, near the company headquarters in Herrenberg. With this set, you get a sofa, armchair and footstool in a single purchase, all in grey. A wooden frame and sinuous springs support the cushions, and removable covers make care easier. According to the manufacturer, table elements, boards and glides are still available. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How are the Jaan Living seat cushions constructed?
Walter Knoll offers two upholstery styles. In the casual version, an inner cover sewn into chambers and filled with feathers sits over a cold foam core. The tailored version is made of cold foam in sandwich construction topped with wadding and, according to the manufacturer, has more resilience.
What is the Jaan Living footstool for?
The footstool is a footrest in front of the sofa or armchair and an extra seat when you have visitors. Walter Knoll offers two footstools in the range: a shorter, deeper one and a long, narrow one. According to the data sheet, both are the same height as the seats of the sofas.
Are the Jaan Living covers removable?
Yes, according to Walter Knoll’s data sheet, all covers in the range are removable, both fabric and leather. Jaan Living is made in a wide variety of fabrics and leathers from the Walter Knoll collection.
Why should you plump up the Jaan Living cushions?
Loose fillings compress under body weight, creating hollows. Walter Knoll therefore recommends plumping up and patting the back and comfort cushions every day. According to the manufacturer, visible chamber seams on the casual version are a mark of quality.
What is the difference between Jaan Living models 782 and 783?
With an overall depth of 95 cm, model 782 is the more compact of the two. Model 783 is 105 cm deep and offers more seat depth and additional elements. The two can be combined, for example into an open seating corner or for sitting face to face.
What are the Jaan Living shelf boards for?
The boards in satin-finished black glass or saddle leather turn the back into a shelf. A newspaper, a glass of wine or a tablet is always within reach, and there is room for lamps and vases too. On model 782 they sit at the back, on model 783 at the side.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Walter Knoll's roots go back to 1865, when Wilhelm Knoll opened a leather shop in Stuttgart. His son Walter founded his own company in 1925, and in 1927 it furnished apartments by Mies van der Rohe on Stuttgart's Weissenhof Estate. Today the firm is based in Herrenberg. Since 1997 the Vienna studio EOOS has designed many models, such as the Living Landscape sofa system, whose end and corner elements rotate by 90 degrees, Jaan Living with feather-filled cushions, and Prime Time.
