About the model
Vitra HAL RE Stool High – bar stool with a recycled plastic shell
Jasper Morrison designed the HAL family for Vitra, which gives the years 2010 and 2014. HAL is conceived as an interpretation of the shell chair in the tradition of the Plastic Chair by Charles and Ray Eames. On the HAL RE, the seat shell is made of through-dyed, recycled polypropylene from the German Gelber Sack recycling collection – in other words, mainly from used packaging. The Stool High stands on four tubular steel legs connected by a footrest with a non-slip surface. Vitra designed it for counters and tables 110 cm high.
HAL RE Stool High bar stool in black plastic
This HAL RE Stool High has a seat shell made of recycled plastic in black. With its high seating position, it suits bar counters, bar-height kitchen islands and standing tables – and standing desks in the office. The footrest supports your feet, and the shell wraps around your back and is easy to clean. Black has a calm look and goes well with wood, stone and metal.
Seating comfort and space
The unupholstered shell gives a firm seat, and its curve supports your back. With a seat height of 78 cm, the stool is designed for counters of around 1.1 m. The footrest gives your feet somewhere to rest, so your legs are not left dangling. The footprint of 50 by 43 cm is small; at a counter, allow about 60 cm of width per stool. Leave space behind it to push it back.
Elements and additions
The HAL family includes chairs with a tubular steel or wooden base, versions with a plywood shell or with upholstery, a chair with armrests and stools in several heights. For the Stool High, Vitra offers screw-on seat pads with a V-Foam core and a cover in Hopsak, for example. As standard, the base comes with glides for carpet; felt glides for hard floors are available as an option.
Caring for plastic and steel
Clean the plastic shell with a damp cloth and a mild soap solution, then wipe it dry. Avoid abrasive cream cleaners, solvents and scratchy sponges. Wipe the chrome or powder-coated base with a damp cloth. According to Vitra, only the unupholstered version with a powder-coated base is suitable for outdoor use, temporarily and followed by cleaning and dry storage.
Why buy a pre-owned Vitra HAL RE Stool High?
Vitra describes the bar stool with its four-legged base as stable and robust, and the through-dyed shell as easy to clean. Scratches do not reveal a different colour, because the material is dyed right through. As Vitra still has the HAL family in its range, a pre-owned stool goes with current HAL chairs at the same table. Every stool has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is the seat shell of the HAL RE Stool High made of?
Through-dyed, recycled polypropylene. Vitra obtains the plastic from the German Gelber Sack, the yellow recycling bag for household waste that consists predominantly of used packaging. Because the material is dyed right through, scratches do not show a different colour.
Which counters does the HAL RE Stool High suit?
Vitra recommends the Stool High for tables and counters 110 cm high, such as bar counters, standing tables or standing workstations in the office. For kitchen counters of 90 cm, the lower HAL RE Stool Medium is the right choice.
How is the base of the HAL RE Stool High constructed?
Four tubular steel legs, chrome-plated or with a dark powder coating, support the shell. A footrest with a non-slip surface connects the legs. Vitra describes the four-legged base as stable and robust.
Can the HAL RE Stool High be upholstered?
Yes. Vitra offers screw-on seat pads with a core of recyclable polyurethane foam, known as V-Foam, and a cover in Hopsak fabric, for example. This makes the stool softer and lets you add a contrasting colour.
What glides does the HAL RE Stool High have?
According to Vitra, the bases come with glides for carpet. For hard floors such as parquet or tiles, felt glides that protect the floor are available as an option. The colour of the glides matches the shell's fittings.
Can the HAL RE Stool High be stacked?
No, Vitra does not make the Stool High stackable. In the HAL family, chairs such as the HAL RE Tube Stackable are stackable. Up to six of them can be stacked on the floor.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Vitra was founded in 1950 by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum as a family business and is based in Birsfelden near Basel; its roots lie in a Basel shopfitting firm. From 1957 Vitra produced designs by Charles and Ray Eames under licence. The Suita sofa range by Antonio Citterio (2010) rests on a tubular steel frame covered in moulded polyurethane foam, with webbing suspension. On the Mariposa by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby (2014), the slim side and back panels adjust individually.
