About the model
B&B Italia Bend – sofa with a wavy shape
Patricia Urquiola designed the Bend sofa for B&B Italia. It was presented in 2010 at Milan Design Week as the manufacturer's 1000th project. It looks as if it were modelled by hand, but it was created from 3D models and digital form studies. The name – the English word for a curve – describes the interplay of full and receding volumes, which a contrast seam emphasises. A tubular steel frame supports padding made of cold-moulded polyurethane foam. Wavy seat, corner and footstool elements form compact sofas as well as large seating landscapes.
Bend corner sofa in grey fabric
This Bend is a two-part corner sofa with a grey fabric cover; seen from the front, the corner is on the right. The calm grey brings the wavy contour and the zigzag seams to the fore. With room for four people, the sofa suits a large living room or an open-plan living area. There, its shape also comes into its own from the side.
Seating comfort and space
According to B&B Italia, the irregular shape of the Bend increases seating comfort. The body is padded with cold-moulded polyurethane foam, and the back cushions combine down with a polyurethane insert. This means you sit on a stable base and lean back against soft cushions. With a seat height of 42 cm, the sofa is in the usual range. Against the wall it takes up around 3.3 m, and the corner extends 1.8 m into the room.
Elements and additions
The Bend has no adjustable functions; its strength lies in combination. The series consists of wavy seat, corner and footstool elements, which form straight sofas, corners and large compositions. There are also dedicated back cushions, and support cushions made of viscoelastic foam. B&B Italia still offers the Bend; a store or authorised dealer can advise on elements and spare parts.
Caring for the fabric cover
Vacuum the cover regularly with the upholstery nozzle, including along the zigzag seams. Soak up spills immediately with kitchen roll. Dab stains from the outside in, with circular movements and without pressing. If the care instructions for the fabric are unknown, B&B Italia recommends dry cleaning. Plump up the back cushions regularly.
Why buy a pre-owned B&B Italia Bend?
B&B Italia was founded in 1966 by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli and introduced cold-moulded polyurethane foam to furniture making. On the Bend, a steel frame supports padding made of this material. The model is still in the manufacturer's range today. A pre-owned Bend is therefore a current model with an unconventional shape that can be extended with elements from the series. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the Bend get its name?
The name is simply the English word for a curve. Patricia Urquiola uses it to describe the movement created by the interplay of full and receding volumes. The contrast seam on the cover reinforces this impression.
How was the shape of the Bend created?
The Bend looks as if a sculptor had shaped it by hand. In fact, the shape emerged from work with 3D models and digital research. According to B&B Italia, the irregular shape increases seating comfort.
Which elements make up the Bend system?
It is based on wavy modules: seat elements, corner elements and footstools. These can be combined into compact straight sofas as well as large compositions. The system is complemented by dedicated back cushions and support cushions.
What are the cushions of the Bend filled with?
The back cushions combine down with a polyurethane insert and feature the typical zigzag seam. The support cushions are made of viscoelastic polyurethane. The body itself is padded with cold-moulded polyurethane foam on a tubular steel frame.
Can the Bend be reupholstered?
A B&B Italia store or authorised dealer can check whether reupholstery or new covers are possible. They need the model name and article number, and the product data sheet is helpful. If it is missing, photos of the sofa will help.
How do you care for the fabric cover of the Bend?
Vacuum the cover regularly with the upholstery nozzle and blot spills straight away with kitchen roll. For cleaning, follow the care instructions for the fabric; if they are unknown, B&B Italia recommends dry cleaning.
Can I see the sofa before buying?
Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
B&B Italia was founded in 1966 in Novedrate near Como by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, initially as C&B with Cesare Cassina; it has carried its current name since 1973. In 1966, Coronado by Afra and Tobia Scarpa combined an iron frame with cold-moulded polyurethane foam, which B&B Italia introduced to the furniture industry. Well-known sofas include Charles by Antonio Citterio, Tufty-Time by Patricia Urquiola and Mario Bellini’s Camaleonda from 1970, whose modules are joined with hooks and rings.
