About the model

B&B Italia Michel – seating system on an aluminium frame

Antonio Citterio designed the Michel for B&B Italia in 2012 as a seating system for anyone who values comfort and a timeless, modern form. It comprises 34 linear and modular elements as well as five footstools, which can be combined formally or casually. It rests on a frame of die-cast aluminium and aluminium profiles, available in several finishes. The seat is made of steel, multilayer wood and polyurethane. The Michel Club and Michel Effe were added in 2015.

Michel corner sofa in grey fabric

This Michel is a three-piece corner sofa with a grey velvet cover; seen from the front, the corner is on the right. With room for five people, it suits a large living room or an open-plan living area. Several people can sit and stretch out here at the same time. Depending on how the light falls, velvet looks lighter or darker and gives the calm grey depth.

Seating comfort and space

The seat cushions combine polyurethane of different firmnesses with down, and the back cushions combine down with a polyurethane insert. The down gives softly, while the foam underneath provides support. With a seat height of 38 cm, you sit noticeably lower than usual, more like on a lounge sofa. The sofa takes up around 3.4 m against the wall, and the corner extends 2.5 m into the room. Leave about 60 to 80 cm clear in front of it.

Elements and additions

The Michel has no adjustable functions, but plenty of additions. The series includes sofas, end elements, chaise longues, benches and footstools. There are also back cushions with a roll and support cushions made of viscoelastic foam. The Michel is still in the range today. A B&B Italia store or authorised dealer can check whether an element fits this sofa, based on the article number.

Caring for the velvet cover

Vacuum velvet with a soft upholstery nozzle in the direction of the pile. For care, B&B Italia recommends a soft pile brush and light steam from a distance of at least 15 cm, without touching the seams. Blot spills straight away with kitchen roll. Regularly remove the cushion covers, knead the padding thoroughly and plump it up.

Why buy a pre-owned B&B Italia Michel?

B&B Italia was founded in 1966 by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli; its headquarters in Novedrate was designed in 1972 by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. The Michel is still in the manufacturer's range today. Its construction with a metal frame and individual cushions lets you plump up and swap the cushions – so the seats keep an even look. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

How many elements make up the Michel system?

B&B Italia lists 34 linear and modular elements as well as five footstools. They include sofas, end elements, chaise longues and benches, from which straight sofas and corner solutions can be put together.

What is the difference between the Michel, Michel Club and Michel Effe?

The Michel Club from 2015 looks more classic because its seat cushions and base are proportioned differently. The Michel Effe, also from 2015, has a more rigorous design. The Michel from 2012 forms the basis of the family.

How is the Michel upholstered?

The back and armrests are padded with cold-moulded polyurethane foam and polyester fibre. The seat combines steel, multilayer wood and polyurethane; the seat cushions consist of foam of different firmnesses with down. The back cushions combine down with polyurethane.

Which cushions are available for the Michel?

B&B Italia offers box-shaped back cushions and back cushions with a roll, both made of down and polyurethane. There are also support cushions made of viscoelastic foam. A B&B Italia store or authorised dealer can clarify whether cushions can be reordered for your sofa.

How do the cushions of the Michel keep their shape?

Pat the cushions all over by hand and plump them up so that the filling regains its volume. Now and then, swap frequently used cushions with those that are used less. Tighten the hook-and-loop fastenings on the cover so that no creases remain.

How do you care for the velvet cover of the Michel?

Vacuum velvet regularly with a soft upholstery nozzle in the direction of the pile. B&B Italia also recommends a soft pile brush and light steam from a distance of at least 15 cm. Blot spills straight away with kitchen roll, without rubbing.

Can I see the sofa before buying?

Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

B&B Italia was founded in 1966 in Novedrate near Como by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, initially as C&B with Cesare Cassina; it has carried its current name since 1973. In 1966, Coronado by Afra and Tobia Scarpa combined an iron frame with cold-moulded polyurethane foam, which B&B Italia introduced to the furniture industry. Well-known sofas include Charles by Antonio Citterio, Tufty-Time by Patricia Urquiola and Mario Bellini’s Camaleonda from 1970, whose modules are joined with hooks and rings.
