About the model

B&B Italia Ray – sofa system with decorative stitching

Antonio Citterio designed the Ray for B&B Italia in 2010. It is a modular system of straight elements, chaise longues and end elements, which form corner sofas and sofas with a peninsula. It is defined by straight lines and tailored details such as the decorative blanket stitch, either tone-on-tone or contrasting. The U-shaped die-cast aluminium foot and the height of the seat cushions give the sofa its balanced proportions. Inside, a tubular steel frame provides the structure.

Ray three-seater in grey fabric

This Ray is a three-seater with a grey fabric cover. The straight body sits slightly above the floor on the U-shaped aluminium feet, and the neutral grey lets the seams and lines stand out. As a three-seater, the Ray suits a medium-sized living room, a seating group with an armchair or a spot in front of a wall of windows. Three people sit comfortably side by side without the sofa dominating the room.

Seating comfort and space

The seat cushions combine polyurethane of different densities with down, and the back cushions are filled with polyester fibre. This means you sit softly on the surface with stable support at the core. The feet raise the body 10 cm off the floor, making it easy to clean underneath. The sofa needs around 2.35 m against the wall and is 99 cm deep. Allow about 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.

Elements and additions

Nothing on the Ray is adjustable; it can be extended with elements from the series. These include straight elements, chaise longues and end elements, which form corner sofas and peninsulas. For outdoors, there is a separate line, Ray Outdoor. A B&B Italia store or authorised dealer can look into reupholstery and spare parts based on the model name and article number.

Caring for the fabric cover

The covers of the Ray are removable. They are cleaned according to the care instructions for the fabric; if these are unknown, B&B Italia recommends dry cleaning. For everyday care, vacuum the fabric with a soft upholstery nozzle. Dab stains with a light-coloured, slightly damp cloth, without rubbing. Plump up the cushions regularly.

Why buy a pre-owned B&B Italia Ray?

B&B Italia was founded in 1966 by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli and introduced cold-moulded polyurethane foam to furniture making. The Ray adds a practical point: the covers are removable and can be cleaned. Die-cast aluminium feet and a tubular steel frame are a solid basis for a sofa that is used for many years. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

Which elements belong to the Ray system?

The Ray starts with straight elements, chaise longues and end elements. From these, straight sofas, corner sofas and sofas with a peninsula can be put together, depending on the room and how you like to sit.

Are the covers of the Ray removable?

Yes. B&B Italia designed the Ray with removable covers, which the decorative blanket stitch further emphasises. The care instructions for the fabric show how a cover should be cleaned; if in doubt, the manufacturer recommends dry cleaning.

How is the Ray upholstered?

The frame is made of tubular steel and steel profiles. The seat cushions combine foam of different densities with down, and the back cushions are filled with polyester fibre and also edged with blanket stitch. The feet are made of die-cast aluminium.

What is the blanket stitch on the Ray?

The blanket stitch is a tailored decorative seam that edges the covers. On the Ray, it comes tone-on-tone or in a contrasting colour. B&B Italia uses it deliberately to highlight the removable covers.

Is there also a Ray for outdoors?

Yes. Alongside the Ray for indoor living spaces, B&B Italia offers a separate outdoor line, Ray Outdoor. With its removable covers, the indoor Ray remains a sofa for living spaces.

How do you care for the grey fabric cover of the Ray?

Vacuum the cover regularly with a soft upholstery nozzle, especially along the decorative seams. Lift fresh stains with a light-coloured, slightly damp cloth, dabbing rather than rubbing. Plump up the cushions from time to time so that they give evenly.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

B&B Italia was founded in 1966 in Novedrate near Como by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, initially as C&B with Cesare Cassina; it has carried its current name since 1973. In 1966, Coronado by Afra and Tobia Scarpa combined an iron frame with cold-moulded polyurethane foam, which B&B Italia introduced to the furniture industry. Well-known sofas include Charles by Antonio Citterio, Tufty-Time by Patricia Urquiola and Mario Bellini’s Camaleonda from 1970, whose modules are joined with hooks and rings.
