About the model

B&B Italia Andy – sofa with an adjustable backrest

Paolo Piva designed the Andy for B&B Italia in 2002, and the revised Andy '13 followed in 2013. The idea is a sofa that changes its shape. A mechanism in the backrest adjusts its angle from horizontal to vertical. Laid flat, the sofa looks low and decorative; raised, the backrest supports your back. The seat can also be pulled forward, turning the sofa into a chaise longue. Inside, a tubular steel frame provides the structure.

Andy three-seater in white leather

This Andy is a three-seater with a white leather cover. The backrest and seat can be adjusted, turning the sofa into a daybed: upright for sitting, flat and extended for stretching out. The white leather makes the low, wide piece look light. The Andy suits a living room where you sit during the day and lie down in the evening, or a TV room. White goes with light floors as well as with dark wood.

Seating comfort and space

The Andy is padded with cold-moulded polyurethane foam under a layer of polyester fibre. The back cushions contain down and polyester fibre and give softly. With a seat height of 41 cm, you sit a little lower than usual. Set upright, the backrest supports your back; laid flat, it creates an open surface for lying down. The sofa needs around 2.5 m of wall space and just under 1.5 m in depth. Allow extra space in front of it for the extended seat.

Functions and additions

Two functions define the Andy. You change the angle of the backrest using the mechanism inside it, and you pull the seat forward. Both are done by hand, without a motor or cables. The series includes a footstool matched to the modules. B&B Italia offers today's Andy '13 as a straight sofa and as a corner sofa with a chaise longue.

Caring for the leather cover

Remove dust with a soft, dry cotton cloth. Soak up spills straight away with kitchen roll, and dab stains from the outside in. White leather picks up colour from freshly dyed textiles such as jeans. Once or twice a year, a care product for light-coloured leather keeps it supple. Direct sunlight can cause light-coloured leather to yellow.

Why buy a pre-owned B&B Italia Andy?

B&B Italia was founded in 1966 by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli. The manufacturer introduced cold-moulded polyurethane foam to furniture making – the material the Andy's padding is also made of. The adjustment works purely mechanically, without a motor or electronics. A pre-owned Andy therefore offers the same possibilities as a new one, and leather develops its own patina over time. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

How do you adjust the backrest of the Andy?

A mechanism in the backrest changes its angle. It ranges from a horizontal position, in which the sofa looks low and decorative, to an upright position. Raised, the backrest supports your back; B&B Italia describes this position as particularly comfortable for the back.

How does the Andy become a chaise longue?

The seat of the Andy can be pulled forward. This makes the seat deeper and turns the sofa into a chaise longue. If both seats of a sofa with two seat sections are pulled out, B&B Italia says the resulting surface is large enough for a bed.

How is the Andy upholstered?

Inside, a frame of tubular steel and steel profiles provides the structure. It is padded with cold-moulded polyurethane foam and wrapped in polyester fibre. The back cushions contain down and polyester fibre, and on the Andy '13 also a polyurethane insert. The feet and glides are made of plastic.

Does the Andy need electricity for the adjustment?

No. The backrest and seat are adjusted mechanically, without a motor or cables. You can therefore place the Andy freely in the room without having to think about a power socket. There are no electronics that would need servicing.

Can the Andy be reupholstered?

B&B Italia checks case by case whether reupholstery or new covers are possible. To find out, contact a B&B Italia store or authorised dealer with the model name and article number. Enquiries about spare parts go through the same channel.

How do you care for an Andy in white leather?

Wipe off dust with a soft, dry cloth and treat stains straight away with a slightly damp cloth. Once or twice a year, the leather benefits from a suitable care product. Protect light-coloured leather from freshly dyed textiles such as jeans.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

B&B Italia was founded in 1966 in Novedrate near Como by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, initially as C&B with Cesare Cassina; it has carried its current name since 1973. In 1966, Coronado by Afra and Tobia Scarpa combined an iron frame with cold-moulded polyurethane foam, which B&B Italia introduced to the furniture industry. Well-known sofas include Charles by Antonio Citterio, Tufty-Time by Patricia Urquiola and Mario Bellini’s Camaleonda from 1970, whose modules are joined with hooks and rings.
