About the model
B&B Italia AC Lounge – sofa from the Maxalto collection
Antonio Citterio designed the AC Lounge in 2009 for Maxalto, the classically oriented B&B Italia collection where he is art director. The sofa was intended for the contract sector, such as hotels and offices. According to the manufacturer, however, it is just as much at home in a private residence. Its defining feature is a seat made of a single quilted cushion, and the back cushions echo the quilting. Inside, a frame of tubular steel and steel profiles provides the structure. An aluminium trim frames the lower edge, and the feet are made of lacquered sheet steel.
AC Lounge three-seater in black leather – floor model
This AC Lounge is a three-seater with a black leather cover. It was on display in a showroom and was never used in a home. The black leather makes the quilting of the continuous seat cushion stand out clearly and emphasises the straight, calm line. Three people sit side by side on one surface without any gaps. The sofa works as the main sofa in a living room, but also in a law firm, a practice or a reception area.
Seating comfort and space
According to B&B Italia, the seat and back cushions are padded with polyurethane of different densities and polyester fibre; down is not listed. The continuous cushion forms an even seat. With a seat height of 39 cm, you sit a little lower than usual, more like on a lounge sofa. Against the wall the sofa takes up around 2.2 m, and it extends 90 cm into the room. Leave about 60 to 80 cm of walking space clear in front of it.
Elements and additions
The AC Lounge has no adjustable functions. The range includes sofas in two widths, a matching footstool and an armchair. This lets you put together a seating group in the same design language, for example with an armchair opposite. At B&B Italia, reupholstery and spare parts are handled by its stores and authorised dealers. They check what is possible based on the model name and article number.
Caring for the leather cover
Wipe off dust with a soft, dry cotton cloth. Soak up spills immediately with kitchen roll. Dab stains from the outside in so that no rings form. Once or twice a year, leather needs a suitable care product; B&B Italia offers its own kit for this through specialist retailers. Keep it away from direct sunlight and radiators.
Why a B&B Italia AC Lounge floor model?
Maxalto was founded in 1975 and stands for furniture with a classic character within B&B Italia. The AC Lounge is designed for the contract sector, where sofas see heavy use. The steel frame, aluminium trim and sheet steel feet are correspondingly sturdy. As a floor model, by contrast, this sofa was never used in a home. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is special about the seat cushion of the AC Lounge?
The seat consists of a single, continuous quilted cushion. The back cushions pick up the same quilting, so the seat and back look uniform. The cushions are filled with polyurethane of different densities and polyester fibre, with a cotton casing on top.
What kind of spaces was the AC Lounge developed for?
B&B Italia developed the AC Lounge for the contract sector, meaning hotels, offices and other public spaces. The manufacturer stresses that it fits just as well into private homes. B&B Italia explicitly names both settings.
Which pieces belong to the AC Lounge family?
Besides the sofa in two widths, there is an armchair and a footstool. This lets you put together a seating group in the same design language, for example for a lounge or a large living room. A B&B Italia store or authorised dealer can tell you which pieces can be added today.
Can the AC Lounge be reupholstered?
B&B Italia checks this case by case. Contact a B&B Italia store or authorised dealer with the model name and article number. They will clarify whether reupholstery or new covers are possible; enquiries about spare parts go through the same channel.
What links the AC Lounge to Maxalto?
The AC Lounge is part of the B&B Italia Maxalto collection. Maxalto was founded in 1975 and stands for a classic line; Antonio Citterio is its art director. B&B Italia describes the AC Lounge as a sofa that embodies this classic style.
How do you care for the black leather of the AC Lounge?
Remove dust with a soft, dry cotton cloth and soak up spills straight away with kitchen roll. Once or twice a year, a suitable care product keeps the leather supple. B&B Italia offers its own care kit for this, available from its stores and dealers.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
B&B Italia was founded in 1966 in Novedrate near Como by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, initially as C&B with Cesare Cassina; it has carried its current name since 1973. In 1966, Coronado by Afra and Tobia Scarpa combined an iron frame with cold-moulded polyurethane foam, which B&B Italia introduced to the furniture industry. Well-known sofas include Charles by Antonio Citterio, Tufty-Time by Patricia Urquiola and Mario Bellini’s Camaleonda from 1970, whose modules are joined with hooks and rings.
