About the model
B&B Italia Charles – a sofa system made of elements
Antonio Citterio designed the Charles for B&B Italia in 1997 as a sofa system of elements that can be arranged into straight sofas, corner solutions and combinations with a chaise longue. The frame is made of steel sections, the padding of moulded polyurethane foam. Its hallmark is the die-cast aluminium feet, shaped like an upside-down L, which lift the sofa off the floor. Each element has one continuous seat cushion, plus loose back cushions in two sizes.

This Charles is configured as a corner sofa: on the left a sofa element with an armrest and a depth of 97 cm, on the right – seen from the front – a lounging element with its own backrest and armrest that extends 230 cm into the room. It is upholstered in Antille, a dark grey, finely mottled woven fabric, and the feet are light aluminium. Three loose back cushions rest against the backrest. At 327 cm wide, the corner sofa seats four.
Why buy a pre-owned B&B Italia Charles?
B&B Italia has been making upholstered furniture since 1966 and introduced cold-moulded polyurethane foam to the furniture industry. The label under this Charles lists a steel-section frame, injection-moulded polyurethane foam and the note Made in Italy. The cover is removable and can be cleaned or renewed. The two elements can be separated for a move and put back together in their new place. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Wie pflegen Sie das Sitzkissen des Charles?
Weil das Sitzkissen Daunen enthält, sollten Sie es regelmäßig in Form bringen: Streichen Sie den Bezug glatt, stellen Sie das Kissen hochkant und klopfen Sie es rundum ab. So verteilt sich die Füllung wieder gleichmäßig.
Welche Ausführungen der Füße gibt es beim Charles?
Die Füße aus Aluminiumguss bietet der Fachhandel in glänzend gebürstetem Aluminium, in schwarz verchromter Ausführung und in Nickel-Bronze an. Ihre Form als umgedrehtes L bleibt bei allen Ausführungen gleich.

B&B Italia wurde 1966 von Piero Ambrogio Busnelli in Novedrate bei Como gegründet, zunächst als C&B mit Cesare Cassina; den heutigen Namen trägt das Unternehmen seit 1973. Coronado von Afra und Tobia Scarpa verband 1966 ein Eisengestell mit kalt geformtem Polyurethanschaum, den B&B Italia in die Möbelbranche einführte.
